The Outdoor Research Trailbreaker II Softshell Pant is designed for high-output winter travel. Whether you're on the skin track or boot packing to the summit, the softshell construction keeps you mobile, comfortable, and protected from the elements. In fact, the lower legs are constructed with a three-layer Pertex Shield membrane to provide you with waterproof protection when you're breaking trail. The upper part of the pant is water-resistant to still provide weather protection while remaining breathable to keep you comfortable on the ascent. Zippered thigh vents aid in keeping you cool while moisture-wicking ActiveTemp at the waist enhances comfort. Overall, the material is abrasion-resistant to withstand the rigors of mountain travel while reinforced scuff guards at the hem offer added protection from your crampons and ski edges to keep the pant in top shape throughout many seasons.

Comfortable softshell pants

I've used it several times

These are a great snow pant shell. They are super comfortable and seem to run true to size. I love all the vents which allow for different degrees of cooling off. The fabric is soft, stretchy, and forgiving as well. They are perfect for a nice day boarding/skiing on the slopes or for wearing on a winter snowshoe hike. I highly recommend these!

Great product but I wish it came in a short length!!

These overall seem wonderful and I look forward to getting a ton of use out of them this season. HOWEVER, especially with this style of product where the zippers/gaiter prevent straightforward alteration there really really needs to be a shorter inseam option! Tons of women have shorter inseams but still can't wear a size "small"

Had to return

I have large thighs and these did not work for me. Very tight around the thighs!!! I tried the XL but they were too big. I found a pair of bibs from another company that work well instead. OR needs some curvy sized bottoms! Otherwise they seemed like nice pants.

10/10 pant - wont buy anything else again.

I love these shell pants. They are great for ski touring as they dont insulate too much but provide a good amount of water repellency and durability. I still fall quite a bit as im newer to skiing and these keep me nice and dry and I dont worry about them ripping or tearing even if I fall into a bush or scrap against a tree. I love the removable ankle cuffs, and the pockets on these are great. The higher waist at the back is great for when im squatting or sitting to keep my back better protected!

Great pair of pants for trail breaking

I love these pants so far! I've used them 5 times for backcountry touring and they are cute, very comfortable, reasonably warm but also breathable, and the vents are great. I like the adjustable hip belt for a snug fit. My beacon fits in my front or back thigh pocket.

Upgrade from a 10 year old pair of OR Windstopper Softshells

These are the softshells you want. All the best features including integrated inner gaiters. Makes snowshoeing while pulling a toddler on a sled a breeze! Makes raking wet leaves on a freezing cold PNW rainy Saturday less of a chore! Comfortable is an understatement. Let's just say if my employer had a more lax dress code, I would wear these to office (PS...these pants do not create the dreaded "Seinfleld Swooshing" sound commonly associated with weather resistant fabrics). Another 10/10 from a loyal OR customer.

I would buy if the legs were shorter

I like all the features on these pants. I ordered according to sizing chart but the pants are way too big in the hips. I knew the lenght would be too long, I'm 5'1", so I'm used to having too long pants but the articulated knee came down below my knee. Unfortunately, I will be returning this item.

close to perfect pant

The Trailbreaker II womens pants is great! Good fit, Size M fits with room for underlayers for 130lbs, 5'5". The fold up back waist is excellent, fits against the lower back and keeps out drafts. The robust fabric below the knee area is a good idea, will protect the pant from scrapes in the bush and on skis. I bought the light pewter for a change from black, light pewter colour is nice, looks good with many colours of jackets & shirt , the light pewter , like most grey clothing, stains easily, so far have been able to get all stains out by using a stain remover on the area before washing. The velcro waist adjusters are bulky and cause abrasion damage to the lining of jackets, shirts, tshirts , I removed the velcro & elastic to solve this , pant still fits me perfectly without the adjuster. The many pockets are convenient however the shape of the zip hand pockets goes towards the front of the inner thigh, so when there is an object such as a pocketknife or mini tool in the pocket it slides to the front of the inner thigh and feels uncomfortable. I tried placing pocketknife & mini multitool in the thigh pocket but then they can be felt close to the knee, have been using the little pocket to back of left lower thigh for those items, is OK but not perfect. The zipper pulls for the hand pocket and the thigh vents are the same size and very near each other...it is easy to accidentally use the thigh vents as the pocket resulting in items falling down inside the pant, maybe having a slightly different shape for the zipper pulls would be helpful to prevent this. The bottom of the cuff and the snow cuff barely fits over my winter footwear, insulated rubber boots&mukluks even with the zipper open. The snap & zipper pull at the cuff are both tiny and can't be used with gloves/mitts on. The pant fabric feels great, having stretch and abrasion resistance the pant fabric pulls on easy over an underlayer with a smooth surface but not over fuzzy tights.
